KNOXVILLE – The commitment of cornerback Brandon Davis to Tennessee’s 2018 football recruiting class doesn’t mean the Volunteers are done looking for players at that position before signing day on Feb. 7.
It just means they won’t have to rely on Monday’s walk-on tryout that was open to the student body to find them.
Davis, a three-star prospect from New Orleans, announced his commitment to the Vols on Monday, becoming the first defensive back in their 2018 recruiting class.
Tennessee is replacing its top three cornerbacks from the 2017 roster and star nickel back Rashaan Gaulden, who is leaving school early for the NFL draft.
The new coaching staff is making a push for several of the nation’s top unsigned cornerback prospects with some of the remaining room in the recruiting class. Davis chose the Vols over Colorado State and Louisiana-Monroe, among others.
Though the 5-foot-11 Davis did not have other scholarship offers from power conference schools, his addition will bring much-needed depth to Tennessee’s secondary.
Tennessee is still pursuing five-star cornerback prospects Olaijah Griffin and Tyson Campbell, four-star cornerback prospects Taiyon Palmer and Isaac Taylor-Stuart and three-star cornerback prospect Eddie Smith.
