Q: What kind of eye protections should I wear to keep my eyes safe at home?

A: Various home activities can put the eyes at risk of damage. Eye protection should be worn during activities that involve the generation of small particles, flying debris or hazardous chemicals. Both participants and nearby bystanders should consider wearing eye protection.

When selecting protective eye wear choose glasses or goggles labeled “ANSI Z87.1.” This certification is provided by the American National Standards Institute to ensure an appropriate level of eye protection.

Protective eye wear that meets this designation can be purchased at local hardware stores or online. Eye protection frequently prevents what would otherwise be a severe injury to the eye that would typically require surgery.
