Volkswagen appears to be ready to kill off its Beetle again, according to an auto media outlet.

The Volkswagen Beetle will not be replaced and will go out of production after its current generation, the automaker’s research and development chief Frank Welsch told Autocar at the Geneva motor show.

Welsch said that the production version of the VW ID Buzz electric concept would take the place of the Beetle as a retro-inspired model in the VW range, according to Autocar.

The car was discontinued in 1979 in the United States, though it continued to be assembled in Mexico and sold in Central and South America.

The so-called “New Beetle” was introduced in the U.S. in 1997, though it was discontinued in 2011 and replaced by the current version.
