University of Tennessee at Chattanooga head women's basketball coach Jim Foster is retiring after 40 seasons, the university announced Tuesday.

Foster finished with 903 wins, seventh most all-time in NCAA Division I women's basketball history. He was inducted into the Women's Basketball Hall of Fame in 2013.

He was 120-40 in five seasons at UTC, with four trips to the NCAA tournament and a Women's National Invitational Tournament appearance in his final season. The Mocs won four Southern Conference championships during his tenure, going 66-10 in conference play.

Foster's career also included stops at St. Joseph's (1979-91), Vanderbilt (1992-2002) and Ohio State (2003-13). He was the second coach in NCAA history to lead three different teams to at least 200 victories and is the only coach to take a team from four different programs to the NCAA tournament and be ranked in the AP Top 25 poll.

His teams made 32 postseason appearances, 30 in the NCAA tournament, with six Sweet 16 appearance, four Elite Eights and a 1993 appearance in the Final Four with Vanderbilt.

His final team finished with a 17-13 record, falling to Alabama-Birmingham in the first round of the WNIT.

Assistant Katie Burrows will serve as the interim coach, with UTC planning to do a national search for his replacement.
