It took Notre Dame 129 years to reach its first football state championship game. The belief around Glenwood today is that it will take only one more year to win the first football state title in school history.

The Irish looked the part of a title contender Friday night at Jim Eberle Field as Jordan Ford scored three touchdowns and Cameron Wynn rushed for 154 yards as Notre Dame took apart Silverdale Baptist Academy 48-10 in a Division II-AA East Region game.

“I’ve been coaching 20 years and I have never seen a team start earlier than this one did after last year,” said coach Charles Fant, referring to his team’s loss in the 2017 state final. “We want to secure home field in the playoffs and follow the same path as last year, only with a different ending.”

Wynn, a finalist for Mr. Football a year ago, started the second half with a 76-yard touchdown run on the first play of the second half, and the Irish poured it from there in winning for the sixth straight time. Last year, the Irish won 11 straight before losing in the final. The Irish scored on all their possessions in the second half.

“Last year’s game is definitely driving us,” said Wynn, who has more than 20 scholarship offers to date.

Notre Dame (6-1, 4-0) will now face Knoxville Grace and Chattanooga Christian in back-to-back weeks with the region title on the line. Ford, a transfer who did not experience last year’s loss in the state final, scored on a punt return, a 50-yard pass and a 12-yard run in accounting for more than 150 all-purpose yards.

“This was a special night,” Ford said. “We just have to stay on the roll.”

Notre Dame scored on its first possession, going 67 yard in eight plays before Watkins scored his first touchdown. The two-point conversion made it 8-0.

Silverdale (3-4, 0-3) answered with its only positive drive of the half as the Seahawks went 80 yards in 11 plays with freshman Conner Delashmitt scoring from 17 yards out on the last play of the first quarter.

Fant was not pleased, and he gathered his team on the sideline.

“I told them they were not doing what they were taught, and if the starters couldn’t get it done, I was going to empty the bench,” he said.

It worked, sort of. After a 38-yard kickoff return by Ford, the Irish moved to the 25 before Wynn danced down the left sideline before fumbling into the end zone for a touchback. After a three-and-out by Silverdale, Ford took the punt back 48 yards for a touchdown that gave the Irish a 14-7 lead with 8:36 left in the half.

Quarterback Parker Brock and Ford connected on a 50-yard touchdown pass with 21 seconds left in the half.
