SATURDAY’S STAR

Wofford quarterback Joe Newman ran for 155 yards and completed eight of his nine throws for 69 yards. He had two rushing scores, including a back-breaking 66-yarder in the fourth quarter with the Terriers up 14-10 at the time.

SATURDAY’S STAT

After a first quarter in which they had 108 yards of total offense, the Mocs netted 86 yards on 30 plays in the final three quarters of the game.

TURNING POINT

The Mocs had just gained their first takeaway on a Marshall Cooper-caused fumble recovered by D.J. Jackson, but the offense went three-and-out, and on Wofford’s next play from scrimmage, Newman ran 66 yards untouched for the score.

THE BIG PLAY

This also was Newman’s long scoring run because of the timing of it. UTC had held Wofford scoreless the two prior quarters, and while the touchdown didn’t put the game out of reach, it put the Mocs in a hole they weren’t able to overcome.

WHAT IT MEANS

The Mocs have hit a rough patch. They’re struggling to run the ball, and it has taken away their downfield passing game. But at 4-2, they’re where most people probably had them at this point, and if they win at Western Carolina and are 5-2 going into a bye, they’ll be in good shape.

HOW THEY SCORED

FIRST QUARTER

UTC – Bryce Nunnelly 11-yard pass from Nick Tiano (Victor Ulmo kick), 8:03

Drive: 13 plays, 75 yards, 6:57

Key play: On the Mocs’ only third-down play of the drive, Tiano found a little gap and gained 4 yards on a keeper to the Wofford 24-yard line.

UTC 7, WOFFORD 0

WOF – Joe Newman 12-yard run (Luke Carter kick), 3:57

Drive: 8 plays, 72 yards, 3:57

Key play: The Terriers never faced a third down as they drove right back downfield for the score.

UTC 7, WOFFORD 7

UTC – Ulmo 42-yard field goal, 0:43

Drive: 7 plays, 53 yards, 3:11

Key plays: Penalties were UTC’s best friend on the drive, with targeting and unsportsmanlike conduct called against the Terriers giving the Mocs 30 free yards.

UTC 10, WOFFORD 7

SECOND QUARTER

WOF – Lennox McAfee 4-yard run (Carter kick), 10:54

Drive: 10 plays, 80 yards, 4:40

Key plays: This time the Terriers faced a couple of third downs, with a 13-yard completion from Newman to Jason Hill and a 1-yard run on third-and-1 by Andre Stoddard moving the chains.

WOFFORD 14, UTC 10

FOURTH QUARTER

WOF – Newman 66-yard run (Carter kick), 12:01

Drive: 1 play, 66 yards, 0:12

Key play: Newman ran left and found a hole as he had done all game long, and he sprinted untouched to the end zone.
