On tariffs, Mitchell will listen to us
Earlier this year, President Trump imposed tariffs that directly impact economic growth in Tennessee and the 3rd Congressional District. A 25 percent tariff on steel and 10 percent on aluminum will have devastating effects on production at the Volkswagen plant here and potentially lead to worker layoffs.
Further, Tennessee is a leading state in trade to other countries, exporting soybeans, cotton, beef and corn. Many of those most impacted by tariffs and trade wars are small business owners. It’s hard to compete on the world stage when policies of the administration seek to work against the idea of fair trade.
Our congressman, Chuck Fleischmann, has chosen to remain largely silent on these issues; his silence shows support of the president’s plans to devastate the economy with tariffs and trade wars. If he had reached out to citizens and business owners, he would know tariffs are a bad idea for Tennessee.
We need Dr. Danielle Mitchell representing us in Washington. She wants to know what we think and will listen to our ideas and concerns.
Please join me in supporting her. She is the right person at the right time to do what’s right for Tennessee.

‘Collusion’ angst much ado about nothing
Russia, if you are listening, if you can find the 100,000 pages of Kavanaugh’s service that Trump is hiding, I’m sure the press will reward you.
And if you can find Trump’s tax returns, you will be wealthy.
No collusion here, but if it is, collusion is not a crime. Sad.

Fix Catholic Church by fixing priests
The heinous sexual abuse of children in the Catholic Church, by the priesthood, must be dealt with and not continue to be swept under the altar.
I know that everything comes from the Vatican, and if the Vatican refuses to put an end to it then we, American Catholics, need to “take command here.”
My idea of how to stop this horrific abuse of our children is as follows:
1. Every currently practicing priest should be given the option of submitting to castration or resigning the priesthood.
2. Every young man desiring to enter the priesthood should agree that upon the year of graduation, he submit to castration or leave the school and priesthood ministry.

Columnist Pitts went too far on president
Response to Leonard Pitts’ Sept. 3 column:
I think this time you have taken a long walk off a short pier. Usually I agree with what you have to report in your columns, but since Mr. Trump was elected president, most of you commentators and politicians want to pick him to pieces because he isn’t a politician. He is a businessman, and you people just can’t stand that.
Mr. Trump was told to not attend the funeral. Period. Which to me would be an insult to Mr. Trump. For you to denigrate the president because he was told not to attend? You didn’t say one word about George Bush passing gum or candy to Michelle Obama during the funeral services and smiling about it, did you?
Well, Mr. Pitts, I think you are the pathetic one here to bring the president’s family into your column of diatribe. Mr. Pitts, I’ll leave you with a thought from the Bible if you care to check it out: John 8-7, “He that is without sin let him cast the first stone.”
