The Chattanooga Symphony and Opera will open its 2018-19 season Thursday in the Tivoli Theatre with a celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month. The CSO brings Latin flair to the stage with a program of Latin pieces, conducted by Kayoko Dan.

Especially noteworthy will be the world premiere of “Fanfare Alegre: Dia de la Fiesta,” (Joyful Fanfare: Day of the Festival), commissioned by the CSO of local composer Douglas Hedwig.

“Fanfare Alegre: Dia de la Fiesta” evokes the experience of a festival day in the life of a Latino/Hispanic community, according to a CSO release. More of an overture than traditional fanfare, the piece draws upon the rich, colorful sounds of the full symphony for this brief tone poem.

Hedwig is a trumpet player who played with the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra for 27 years, is heard on more than 40 major albums ranging from chamber music to the Grammy Award-winning recording of Gershwin’s “Porgy & Bess” with the Houston Grand Opera.
