Signal IB students’ success can be replicated

I was thrilled to see the photo of the seven Signal Mountain IB students who had outscored other schools worldwide in the International Baccalaureate Middle years program.

For too long in Chattanooga, I have been listening to conversations in which people have stated the only way to get a good education for your child is to shell out thousands for one of the private schools, where the tuition is well beyond the reach of most.

The goal for us here should be to fight for better public education for all of our students so that this wonderful result from Signal Mountain can be duplicated and expanded. This school has proved it is possible.

Go ahead, abort; Bible’s mum on it

Is the Bible inerrant, completely true, inspired? If so, what does it say about abortion? Nothing, that’s right, nothing.

The Bible warns against mildew, Leviticus 13:47-52, but not abortion. Abortion was permitted under Roman law at the time of Jesus, but Jesus said nothing. Obviously, mildew was more important.

Genesis 2:7 says Adam was conceived without life and received life through God’s breath. So, when you can breathe on your own, you’re alive (a person). If God meant abortion to be called murder, he had 788,280 words in the King James Bible to say so but didn’t.

Surely, an omniscient God anticipated modern medicine. Resuscitating premature babies is human will, not God’s. Stillborn babies may have had a heartbeat but never take a breath.

Exodus 21:22-25 describes a pregnant woman who comes between two men fighting. The woman miscarries, but it was treated as property loss, not murder. Killing a pregnant woman murders two people because it’s the woman’s choice to terminate pregnancy.

Revelation 22:18-19: “Do not add to what I command …” Abortion isn’t in the Bible. Stop making stuff up!

Trump giving GOP big, black eyesore

I am writing in hopes of preventing World War III. I should be ashamed, maybe, for harboring a desire for the (not my) president to be around a little longer just to enjoy watching him give the “Repugnant” Party a big, black, eyesore. More so, he’s a bully.

I cut Trump some slack at first, but after I saw how he mocked a handicapped reporter, and then his despicable behavior with the Gold Star family, I dropped him like a hot potato.

What is as scary is to know half of our country supports him. That’s really terrorizing and dangerous.

Do you remember when the Republicans cared about all Americans? Neither do I.

Voting for more accountability

Accountability.

There have been countless words and opinions expressed during this election season. It comes down to this: Everyone is sick of elected personnel in Washington not being held accountable for their dishonesty and corruption. On both sides.

Hillary Clinton is the most corrupt and dishonest figure in Washington, and it’s to the point where she thinks she’s untouchable. It’s time for her to be out of voters’ lives.

Vote Trump. But think of it as ridding Washington of years of no accountability for corruption. You’re not voting for Trump, per se. You’re voting to finally have people that break the law by entering this country illegally be held accountable. You’re voting for criminals to be held accountable. You’re voting for the corrupt Clintons to he held accountable.

Trump proudly declared that he’s not a politician. And he’s going to see that lawbreakers get held accountable for their actions.

That’s where my vote is going.

Bias the only factor in supporting Ford

David Cook, I have read and reread your opinion in the Sept. 23 Times Free Press. It’s pretty easy to see through your left-wing bias.

To state you believe an assault occurred because Christine Ford is so believable is not what I would expect to hear from an educated man, who surely knows this case would never make it to a legitimate trial.

Any good actor can make a believable case for about anything. What has she or her backers said that is provable beyond a reasonable doubt or any doubt, for that matter? Ford chose not to bring this accusation forward in previous confirmations of Kavanaugh – only the most important one.

She has conspired with Sen. Feinstein and the left to try to torpedo this nomination at the last minute. Laughable – with wheels only due to media bias.

I submit you believe her due to your bias, period! Even so, the case you make is as weak as it could be when logic is applied.

You have written in the past about lynchings. I submit you are participating in the lynching of Judge Kavanaugh with no more proof than you have cited in previous lynchings!

EPB wrong to raise rates, cut services

Recently, EPB decided to raise rates up to $8 per month. It claims it is losing money on the video side because of the cut-the-cord campaign.

EPB wants to have 100,000 subscribers by doing this. Comcast is raising its rates, too. They don’t get it; by raising rates, they will ensure more people will cut the cord and use their smart TVs for getting movies and TV programs.

EPB should listen to its customers instead of jacking up the rates since it is a local company, unlike Comcast, which is nationwide. It’s common sense if it wants more customers.

What do we have in return? So far, nothing, since EPB took away standard definition channels from the premium channels. Is EPB going to increase storage on the DVR since it did away with the standard definition channels? Only time will tell.

How much will the increase be in another year when Comcast jacks up its rates? I’m sure EPB will do the same since it will fall back on the claim it is losing money.

Let the public know EPB is wrong on this; let them know their customers will not take it anymore.

Beware a slump in the economy

The economy is going well now, but we are looking at a big fall slump because:

1. The deficit is rising at a $1 trillion-per-year rate.

2. Expenditures are exceeding the budget.

3. Tax revenues are way down.

4. Economists say this cannot last and another “Black Monday” will hit the market soon.

5. Beware, and don’t be fooled.

Forget the data, it’s climate change

The Sept. 19 Free Press editorial missed the point in saying there has been no long-term change in global hurricane activity, and concerning Florence in particular. Most scientists and the general public understand that climate change, or climate weirding as some call it, is having an effect.

Yes, Florence was about weather, but it was exacerbated by climate change. You overlooked a scientific fact in citing the data about hurricanes and the destruction of Florence.

When water warms, it expands. Seawater is rising because it is warming. Witness islands where inhabitants are seeing coastlines disappear or cities like Miami and Charleston experiencing regular tidal flooding.

Thus, before Florence began, seawater was already higher, causing higher storm surges and flooding that reached further inland. Scientists attribute warmer seas to excessive carbon emissions. That’s climate change impact.

Further, saying that hurricanes are less frequent because they haven’t hit North Carolina in many years is disingenuous. It’s planetary: hurricanes (Puerto Rico and Philippines), wildfires, changing soil/crop conditions, tropical insect infestations, disappearing snow-melt, plus heat and cold extremes. Take actions now to reduce carbon footprints and slow the rate of climate change.
