NASHVILLE – As he travels with President Donald Trump today to the U.S. border with Mexico, U.S. Rep. Chuck Fleischmann is calling a spike in immigration “staggering” and warns it “should sound the alarm to all Americans.”

Fleischmann, R-Tennessee, the top Republican on the House Appropriations Subcommittee for Homeland Security, is among those joining Trump as the president travels to Calexico, California, to visit with U.S. Board Patrol agents and to view what the White House says is new border wall construction.

It comes a day after the president backed away from his threat to shut down the entire border with Mexico.

“As I travel with President Trump to the border today, I hope to hear from the men and women in the trenches and gain a firsthand perspective of the humanitarian crisis threatening our nation,” Fleischmann said in a statement.

The congressman said he supports Trump “as he works to build the wall along our southern border and stem the tide of deadly drugs, human trafficking, and illegal immigration pouring into our country.”

Trump is scheduled to visit a section of newly installed 30-foot-tall border fencing.

The Los Angeles Daily News reported the president will later attend a Beverly Hills political fundraiser.
