A wonderful place for a mural would be on the retainer wall on Riverside Drive where the entrance ramp comes in from Fourth Street, which is a heavily traveled area with both tourists and locals. I love all the fantastic murals downtown. How about it, all you talented artists?

Extreme GOP base captured Trump
It is said the Republican Party has been taken captive by Trump. I think the reverse is true. The extreme Republican base took Trump captive. Yes, they voted for George W. Bush, and Mitt Romney, but as the lesser of two evils, all the while awaiting their champion or messiah. Well, he arrived in the form of Donald J. Trump. He talked the talk they had been talking for years.
I believe an example of this base is reflected by a writer of a letter to the TFP, which appeared April 7. The writer attacks Sen. John McCain’s personality, academic record and military skills without offering any evidence. He is somewhat gracious. It is OK with him to allow McCain to rest in peace since he suffered as a POW. He fails to mention that McCain could have avoided most of this suffering, if he had accepted an offer by the enemy to be released. He rejected the offer because it didn’t apply to the other POWs. Trump suffered from a bone spur in the foot. He got a deferment from military service. Whatever happened to that spur?

New resident questions bills
We just moved here in December and I am beginning to think we made a horrible mistake. A vote against women’s health? And, a vote to make it harder for people to vote? I need an explanation, along with a stiff drink.
By the way, we love our 119 year-old home, our neighbors, Highland Park and the proximity to events in the city. We need representatives to bring Tennessee into the 21st century rather than trying to put us back in the Jim Crow era.

Climate change deniers ‘medieval’
Regarding your recent article on climate change, I can’t believe we are still having this conversation. Denying climate change is comparable to believing the earth is flat, the sun revolves around the earth and the moon landing was a hoax. Climate change is not an “Earth worshiping religion” or a “false prophet.” It’s science.
There are 25 glaciers in Glacier National Park. In 1850, there were 150. In Scandinavia, Iceland, Greenland and Alaska, permafrost is disappearing, which will impact infrastructure and building. Closer to home, storms and hurricanes are becoming more intense and frequent. To state as “fact” that “thermometers are sometimes put in the wrong locations and pick up heat because they are near parking lots” should be filed away with “raking the forest floor will help prevent forest fires” and “windmills cause cancer.” I’m sure scientists are smart enough to put thermometers in strategic locations all over the world.
There is a difference between weather and long range climate patterns. Climate change is not politics, not religion, not an elitist world view. It is an economic, geopolitical and geographic threat. Embracing a medieval world view of science is no way to deal with it.
