Surface Dynamics LLC will expand its operations in West Tennessee with a nearly $10 million expansion in Bartlett, Tennessee, that will add 110 jobs over the next five years.

Surface Dynamics, a part of the medical division of UnitedCoatings Group, has operated in Bartlett since 2010 providing coatings, 3D printing, and solutions to orthopedic original equipment manufacturers. As part of its expansion in Bartlett, Surface Dynamics plans to hire office, engineering and production jobs.

“Each year, Tennessee’s medical device makers export more than $3.3 billion in products, the second highest amount among states in the U.S.,” Tennessee Economic Development Commissioner Bob Rolfe said. “This expansion by Surface Dynamics strengthens one of our state’s most vibrant and thriving sectors, and I look forward to the ways these quality jobs will improve the lives of our residents in Shelby County.”

Boeing must defend union supporter firing

A federal official is making Boeing defend itself against charges that it illegally fired workers for supporting a union at its South Carolina assembly plant.

The regional director of the National Labor Relations Board ruled there’s enough merit to send the cases to an administrative law judge.

The International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers claims six workers were wrongly fired and others disciplined at the plant in North Charleston, where employees build the Boeing 787.

The federal official denied a union claim that Boeing has failed to bargain over a contract.

The union won a May 2018 election to represent about 176 inspectors and technicians. Although a small group, it was a rare labor victory in the state with the lowest percentage of union workers. Boeing is challenging the election.

Trump calls on Fed to cut interest rates

President Donald Trump is calling on the Federal Reserve to cut interest rates by at least a full percentage point “over a fairly short period of time,” saying such a move would make the U.S. economy even better and would also “greatly and quickly” enhance the global economy.

In two tweets Monday, Trump kept up his pressure on the Fed and its chairman Jerome Powell, saying the U.S. economy was strong “despite the horrendous lack of vision by Jay Powell and the Fed.”

He says Democrats were trying to “will” the economy to deteriorate ahead of the 2020 election.

Trump administration officials in recent days have sought to calm worries about a potential U.S. recession that were heightened by last week’s steep stock-market decline.
