Officer’s behavior is defenseless
This letter is another condemnation of one of our law enforcement agencies, this time the police department. Once again we see an officer beating a man who had placed his hands on the car’s roof in compliance at arrest, only to be rushed by a bull elephant intent on dishing out severe pain to someone who had not done anything to warrant such an attack.
Why do law enforcement departments hire- and defend – such dishonorable behavior, even giving them paid leave when the gutless bluecoat deserved to be fired on the spot and arrested himself? Does no one in this town – in this nation – not see that the way to create a system that is fair for all is to stop condoning such schoolyard behavior by our so-called good guys?
As an elderly white man, I am appalled at such criminal behavior by our trusted enforcers of the law. We only pay lip service to the idea that all Americans are deserving of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. And that’s a shame.

Free Press cartoon doesn’t link dots
Is there nothing left of intelligent political commentary? The political cartoon in Monday’s Times Free Press (Jan. 21, page B7) suggests that if someone is accepting of the inevitability of job losses in the dying coal and fossil fuel industries they could therefore not possibly have any compassion for federal workers not receiving a paycheck as a consequence of the government shutdown. This makes about as much sense as comparing a lack of concern for displaced typewriter factory workers with a lack of genuine concern for crime victims. The dots simply do not connect. I mean if someone is going to try to make a point vis-á-vis a political cartoon it should at least be intelligible. This one was not.

A matter of time before Pelosi gives
Act and react, Pelosi vs Trump. Pelosi does not respect Trump, thus she doesn’t respect the office of the president. Pelosi’s presumed power comes from the people who elected her and the members of the House. Trump was elected by the people of the United States. Big difference. When the members of the House who elected her realize their constituents are hurting she will be forced to negotiate.

What did we do to deserve Trump?
What in the world did we do for God to punish us with Donald Trump? In the Jan. 16 Times Free Press, Trump is quoted as saying, “We’re going to stay shut down for a long, long time, if we have to.” Then he emphasized, “We’ll be out for a long time.”
He shows no compassion or sympathy for the 800,000-plus U.S. employees who are not working, or working without pay, because of his decision to shutter federal agencies as some kind of payback to Democrats who refuse to support his idiotic demand to build a medieval border wall. Never mind the harm he is causing to federal workers and their families due to his childish and atrocious behavior.
Trump is a scoundrel with no trace of compassion. He is devoid of humility and decency. Republicans with no backbone cannot bring themselves to do the decent thing due to their inability to stand against this individual who, regrettably, is the president of the U.S. This disgraceful person doesn’t deserve the title of president of the U.S. Our country deserves better; Russia and Putin deserve Trump.
