In just three days, fifty-eight year old Sequoyah Volunteer Fire Department firefighter Sal Coll will set out on his eighth year participating in the Volunteer State Road Race.

The race will start on July 11 at the Kentucky/Tennessee state line where Coll will run 314 miles across the state of Tennessee and end in Castle Rock on Sand Mountain, Georgia, on July 21.

Coll started running in 1983 as a participant in the Gillette Marathon in London, England and has finished 137 Ultra Run events.

Since then, he continues his dedication to training and staying shape for these events.

“Training in this heat and being on your feet for long periods of time is a challenge,” Coll said in a statement. “At my age, finishing these types of events, brings a sense of accomplishment and satisfaction to me. This race is also a reunion of Ultra runners from around the world.”

Coll recently completed his Firefighter 1 certification in May and will have ran over 25,000 miles after this event.
