Tomorrow is the Kentucky Derby, known as the “most exciting two minutes in sports.”
This year, 19 horses will be at the starting gate, which is about typical – these days, anyhow. But in 1892, only three horses showed up at the starting gate. The race was less than 20 years old, and people just weren’t that interested.
What’s more, two of those horses were owned by the same man – and neither of them won. Rather, first place went to a horse named Azra, ridden by a 15-year-old African-American named Alonzo Clayton. To this day, Clayton still holds the title for youngest jockey to win the Kentucky Derby.
And speaking of winning:
A Tennessee movie theater located near a church and next to an elementary school found a hilariously unique way to avoid the “Hellboy” title.
