The Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office, in Murphy, North Carolina, arrested a local man after authorities found a blasting cap last week at his home in the Ranger community.

Owen Gregory Dean, 44, of Murphy, is facing a charge of possessing a weapon of mass destruction, Sheriff Derrick Palmer states in a press release.

Officers acted on a tip that Dean had blasting caps and was wanted for violation of probation in North Carolina, Palmer said.

The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation, North Carolina Department of Public Safety Adult Corrections, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms made a search of Dean’s residence, secured a blasting cap and transported it from the home. Dean remains held on a $15,000.00 secure bond at the Cherokee County Detention Center and has a date in District Court on May 9.
