A Fort Oglethorpe man sought in a deadly crash last month has been arrested in Florida.
Douglas C. Gass, 23, is a suspect in a crash that happened around 11 p.m. on Oct. 7. Police said Gass fled from Fort Oglethorpe police after crashing his vehicle in the 2600 block of East 38th Street. The passenger in Gass' car, 19-year-old Kobe Burchfield, died at the scene.
The arrest happened Friday after authorities with the Bay County Sheriff's Office and the United States Marshal's office learned Gass had been staying at a home in Panama City, according to a post from the office on Facebook.
When they arrived at the home, they saw Gass sleeping on a couch in the living room area. When officers knocked, Gass fled to another area of the home and refused to open the door.
Officers forced open the door and tried to get Gass to surrender. He refused and hid under a bed.
He was taken into custody without further incident.
After the crash, Gass was added to the TBI's Most Wanted list.
Because the crash and subsequent fatality occurred within the city of Chattanooga, the Chattanooga Police Department's Traffic Unit responded to take over the investigation.
Gass faces multiple charges, including vehicular homicide, through Chattanooga Police Department and Georgia law enforcement agencies.
He was booked into the Bay County Jail as a fugitive from justice. He will be held pending an extradition hearing.
