UPDATE: Firefighters bring blaze under control at Hamilton Pointe apartments

UPDATE: Chattanooga firefighters have managed to quench the fire that destroyed the 1800 building of the Hamilton Pointe apartments on East Brainerd Road.

Crews stopped the flames from spreading to other nearby buildings in the complex, according to Chattanooga Fire Department spokeswoman Lindsey Rogers.

One resident has been transported to the hospital with smoke inhalation. She has been listed in stable condition.

A total of 16 apartments burned in the 1800 building, which was a total loss, Rogers said.

No firefighters were injured.

As of 8 p.m., firefighters remained on the scene to monitor hot spots.

Chattanooga firefighters are working to contain a blaze at the Hamilton Pointe apartments on East Brainerd Road, according to fire department spokeswoman Lindsey Rogers.

"We are working a second alarm fire," she said. "... We have been working for more than an hour to get this fire under control and extinguished."

About 16 units of the 1800 building have been impacted by the fire, but so far no injuries have been reported, Rogers said.

The fire appears to have started in a lower unit and spread to the rest of the building.

Other fire departments through a mutual aid agreement are helping to provide fire coverage in the city as Chattanooga Fire Department firefighters tackle the blaze on the scene.

The Red Cross has been contacted to provide assistance to displaced residents.
