Riley Engels' goal 34 seconds into overtime gave the Lee University women's soccer team a 1-0 victory in its season opener Thursday in Allendale, Michigan. The sixth-ranked Lady Flames played Cedarville from Ohio at the home of top-ranked and reigning NCAA Division II national champion Grand Valley State, which will be Lee's opponent at 2 p.m. Saturday. Lee outshot Cedarville 13-6 with a 4-2 edge in shots on goal, and senior goalkeeper Taylor Green made two saves in the shutout win. "It was important for us to get the win today," coach Chris Hennessey said in a Lee release. "I thought Cedarville had a good game plan and frustrated us for the majority of the game. They're very well-coached and will win a lot of games this year. The first game is always tough, but I was pleased with the reaction going into overtime. Now we have to recover and get ready for Saturday."
