Special thanks to Andy Berke, city leaders and more letters to the editors

As America attempts to deal with the coronavirus, we are faced with a sobering reality: Our national executive leadership is ill-prepared.

In recent months we have listened to reports from world leaders and governors of various states in the U.S. explain why it is essential that our efforts to confront this virus depends on uniform, consistent and centralized leadership.

While nationally there has been some confusion and hesitation on what to do and how to proceed, I feel it important to take a moment to thank our local leadership and first responders in Chattanooga. Mayor Andy Berke has shown his willingness to take charge and provide the centralized leadership needed to protect the residents of this city, and we owe you a great debt of gratitude.

Thank you and keep up the good work.

With all due respect, I am staying with Fox

I am always amazed when a left-wing liberal complains about “right wing” Fox News giving President Trump a place to be heard.

I wish a recent letter writer would tell us what other network or cable gives President Trump anything even close to a fair hearing and doesn’t constantly criticize him for everything wrong in this country. Just one network or cable outlet. Please.

In the meantime, I will continue to listen to Fox. And my mind has been made up about who to vote for in November. The socialist Democrats are leading the USA into disaster.

Now is not the time for name-calling

In response to the April 9 letter, “Trump, Fox News need to go now,” what needs to go now is name calling, hate and untruths put forth to try and prove a point. A line in a famous movie, “You can’t handle the truth” says it well. Because it’s harder to accept and understand truth, it is ignored.

During this time of uncertainty and fear in our country, the last thing we need is this kind of rhetoric and statements to fuel the fire of more discontent that are not proven or valid.

It is time to pull together and respect one another and our leaders. Most people are aware of what it takes to overcome and trust our God, for he is the final judge.

Educate yourself about issues, then vote

A hope for the future: Those whose jobs have been looked down upon will finally receive a living wage that enables them to provide for themselves and their families.

In the ’50’s, more people lived comfortable lives. College was more accessible through the GI bill. Training after high school did not require mortgaging one’s future. Eisenhower built the freeway system.

It was not perfect – race relations were terrible, women’s rights were laughable, but corporations paid a substantial tax on their earnings. CEOs were not all millionaires while their lowest employees were on food stamps.

The current entrenched power system is ruining life in America. It is up to each citizen to shoulder responsibility for good governance and representation.

As we bury our dead, let’s resolve to educate ourselves about issues and vote our conscience. We have the right to demand good government and to regain our leadership role in the world.
