McCALLIE BLUE TORNADO

Head coach: Ralph Potter (137-73 in 17 years here; 205-105 overall)

Returning starters: 4 offensive; 6 defensive

Key players: RB B.J. Harris (5-11, 190); WR Eric Rivers (6-0, 170); OL Austin Gentle (6-3, 280); OL Jack Gentle (6-3, 275); DB Nic Robinson (6-1, 185); DB Michael May (6-0, 175); LB J.D. Tessmann (6-2, 205); LB Aaron Crowder (6-0, 230); NG James Howard (6-0, 275).

Team strengths: The nucleus of last year’s championship team returns.

Team concerns: While there aren’t many spots to fill from last season’s lineup, finding a replacement for all-state quarterback DeAngelo Hardy will be no small task. Not only was Hardy one of the state’s top dual threats, he also had a firm grasp of all the little aspects that go into running the offense and being an overall leader.

Breakout candidate: In the biggest spotlight moments last season, Rivers always seemed to find a way to shine. Also considered a college prospect in basketball, once he joined the team after the season had begun, Rivers provided game-breaking ability with his speed and athleticism. He also proved to be versatile enough to play any skill position needed.

Season outlook: McCallie ended the mid-state dominance of Division II-AAA by winning its first state title in 18 years, and doing so in convincing fashion against Montgomery Bell Academy.

The amount of talent alone would make the Blue Tornado contenders once again, but considering those who are providing it also know how to play through adversity and find ways to win close games – a prerequisite for contending in a rugged league – there is every reason to think they will be among the favorites.

Regardless of who takes over at quarterback, the surrounding cast will ease the burden on that young player – consider that Harris is committed to Missouri, Rivers has multiple scholarship offers and the Gentle twins are among the state’s top linemen.

It is also helpful that the early portion of the schedule is favorable, which should allow the young quarterbacks and other inexperienced players to gain some valuable time on the field before jumping into the region portion of the season.
