Bats are not the only species that use echolocation to get around. Blind children have also been known to use sound to get around. Daniel Kish, a California native who lost his sight when he was 13 months old, coined the term “flashsonar” to describe the phenomenon of human echolocation.

Using a series of clicks, snaps and stomps, Kish says he can “see” everything from the size of a room to the fine details of the objects within that room. He is an avid hiker and mountain biker. In fact, through his nonprofit organization World Access for the Blind, Kish leads outdoor adventure trips for blind children all over the world. Learn more about the visionary here.
