Rennia Davis, Rae Burrell and Jordan Horston helped make sure a last-minute addition to Tennessee's schedule didn't become a last-minute loss.
Davis scored 19 points and grabbed a career-high 15 rebounds, Burrell added 18 points, Horston had 13 points, six rebounds, six assists and three steals, and all three provided clutch plays late as the Lady Volunteers held on to upset 15th-ranked Indiana 66-58 on Thursday in Bloomington.
"Just so proud of our kids down the stretch," Lady Vols coach Kellie Harper said during her postgame news conference. "I know they were a little gassed, and they were tough going down the stretch and made plays when we had to make plays."
Tennessee announced the game at Indiana on Monday, a day after a game at No. 23 Texas was called off not long before its scheduled tipoff due to coronavirus contract tracing for the Longhorns.
The Lady Vols (4-1) benefited from the 31st career double-double for Davis, whose pullup jumper with 3:19 to play provided some cushion after the Hoosiers (2-2) - the preseason pick to win the Big Ten championship - had trimmed a 19-point second-half deficit to one point. Then, with Tennessee's lead 58-55, Davis made another basket with a little more than a minute remaining
Burrell's layup off a Davis assist with 50 seconds to go made it 62-56, and Horston sank two free throws soon after. Indiana closed its gap to six again with 33 seconds left, but Davis completed a fast break by driving to the basket for the game's final points off an assist from Horton, who then blocked a layup on the other end.
Ali Patberg scored 16 points to lead the Hoosiers, whose only lead was 2-0, and Jaelynn Penn added 14 with 10 rebounds and five steals. Indiana was 2-for-27 from 3-point range, shot 32% overall and was outrebounded 51-38.
The Lady Vols face Jackson State at noon Sunday in Knoxville.
