The city of Chickamauga currently has no specific zoning policies or ordinances for short-term rentals, according to Zoning and Planning Administrator Briggitt Garrett, but that will likely soon change.
City Manager Michael Haney has said talks on the subject will begin as soon as the next Chickamauga Planning Commission meeting on Feb. 20. The discussion will focus on where short-term rentals can be located, possible taxes and permits.
The city owns and operates two short-term rentals within city limits, which has some locals questioning the move for regulations.
Kristi Bubrig, who is a member of the Walker County Planning Commission, owns several properties which she rents out on Airbnb. She recently moved her popular Harry Potter-themed property from the city to unincorporated Walker County because she favored the county’s guidelines and “the flexibility of that governing team,” she said.
The city owns two large wedding venues, and the rentals are part of those properties.
“In my opinion, I think [short-term rentals] are a good thing, whether owned by government or individuals,” said Haney, citing the hard revenue and tourism dollars tied to such offerings.
