The Vacations We (Don’t) Take
I am not normally a beach person. I tend to prefer jam-packed vacations exploring vibrant cities, cultural institutions and rich dining scenes. But amid this global pandemic, where an undercurrent of anxiety has pervaded daily life and the close contact involved in such vacations generally makes them a no-go, I recently opted for some true R&R amid the calming waves of the Atlantic.
In late June, my partner Jon and I loaded up our two fur babies and headed to St. Simons Island, a dog-friendly beach within easy driving distance. It was our first vacation of the year.
I found St. Simons to be a wonderful compromise between beach and town – and vacation vs. concerns. In our first story below, you can read how other locals are approaching that dichotomy this summer. And in the coming weeks, I’ll bring you a tale from the other side of that coin when I suit up for a flight across the country and my first largely public appearance…at a national amusement park.
