Three weeks from their Sept. 2 opener against Bowling Green inside Neyland Stadium, the Tennessee Volunteers held their first preseason football scrimmage inside their 100-year-old facility.

Thursday also marked the first preseason scrimmage of the Josh Heupel era.

"It was a great day inside of Neyland Stadium," Heupel said in a news conference. "It's awesome any time you get to go in there. There is only one way that we should compete when we walk into that stadium, and I'm proud of a lot of the things that we did on both sides of the football. I thought we played with great effort and energy and strain defensively.

"We competed extremely hard and tackled well in space. Offensively, we showed glimpses but didn't string things together the way we want to or need to, but there will be a lot of things that we'll be able to learn from here as we move forward.
