Trash to Tree Design

If my Christmas tree had a theme, it would be “trash.”

Let me explain.

Rather than setting up an indoor tree, each year, my fiance and I decorate a small cedar at the top of our driveway, which actually remains ornamented, so to speak, throughout the year. Whenever we hike or paddle, we collect interesting litter along the way – mostly sunglasses and shoes. (You’d be surprised by the number of shoes we find along river banks.) And we tuck the found objects into its branches. Then, in December, we string the tree with an assortment of lights, illuminating our odd collection.

A “trash” tree may not be your aesthetic, understandably. But, according to one local decorator, it helps to choose a theme for your holiday design. And our first story below will help guide that process, as well as offer other tips and tricks for making your holidays bright.
