Trails Less Traveled December 30, 2021

Hello to all the hikers looking for a nice, easy stroll for their New Year’s Day hike. Today, we are featuring the West Brow loop near Covenant College on Lookout Mountain, but here are some other first-day hikes to try out (the two closest to Chattanooga are at Harrison Bay and Booker T. Washington state parks – not exactly trails less traveled, though).

West Brow Lookout Mountain Loop

  • Type: Loop
  • Distance: 1.6 miles
  • Difficulty: Easy
  • Time: 1 hour
  • Traffic level: Moderate
  • Drive time from downtown: 21 minutes
  • Dog-friendly: Yes
  • Directions and more information

If you are looking for dazzling views and tough terrain to start off your new year, then West Brow probably shouldn’t be your first choice. But if the food from the holidays is still weighing you down and you want a softer, easier start to 2022, then West Brow is perfect.

In our opinion, AllTrails user “Jason J” describes this trail best.

“No main events, so to speak, but it was a pleasant, sun-dappled stroll under a wind-blown tree canopy,” he said.

Parking can be confusing, but you’ll want to turn onto South Campus Road and then drive past the soccer fields until you reach a parking area by the trailhead.

The nice thing about this trail is that it is wide enough to enjoy side-by-side with family and/or friends and a couple of dogs. The trickier thing about this trail is that there are several offshoots that could make it confusing and prolong your hike. We recommend opening the hike up on AllTrails and following the GPS on there when you get confused.

If you decide to head out on this trail, make sure to take some pictures, and send them to editor@getoutchatt.com. Those pictures might be featured on the Get Out Chattanooga Instagram page.

Happy trails!
