A Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office corrections deputy was assaulted by an inmate at the Silverdale Detention Center on Sunday, according to a news release.
Rodney Edward Ballard was in his housing unit when he “stepped out of his cell and then assaulted the corrections deputy,” the news release states.
The deputy, whose name has not been released, suffered minor injuries after being struck in the face, according to the sheriff’s office. The deputy and the inmate were treated by medical personnel for their injuries.
“Every day our corrections personnel perform an extremely difficult and often dangerous job to ensure both the safety of our community as well as inmates in our correctional facility,” Chief Deputy Austin Garrett said in the release.
“This assault highlights the challenges and violence our personnel face every day in the performance of their duties,” he said.
Ballard was charged with simple assault in connection to the incident and remains in custody.
The investigation is ongoing.
