Tennessee received another football commitment via the NCAA transfer portal Thursday, with former Michigan linebacker William Mohan announcing his plans to play for the Volunteers.
Mohan was a freshman last season for the Wolverines, and joining the Vols would allow him to play under linebackers coach Brian Jean-Mary for a second consecutive season. Jean-Mary was hired by new Tennessee head coach Josh Heupel on Feb. 25, and Mohan entered the portal on April 7.
“Starting over a new chapter in life,” Mohan said Thursday through a post on Twitter. “I want to thank everyone who helped me throughout this process. Thank you, God, and GO VOLS.”
The 6-foot-1, 205-pounder signed with Michigan out of Brooklyn, New York, as the nation’s No. 461 overall prospect in the 247Sports.com composite rankings for the 2020 class. He competed in Michigan’s opening 49-24 dismantling of Minnesota last October and recorded a tackle, but that was his only appearance in a disappointing 2-4 season for the Wolverines that was shortened by coronavirus-related issues.
At Erasmus Hall High School, Mohan racked up 108 tackles during his last two seasons with 26 sacks. Erasmus Hall allowed just 4.3 points per game during the 2019 season, when the team tallied 10 shutouts.
Mohan is the second linebacker to commit to Tennessee through the portal, joining 2020 Texas tackles leader Juwan Mitchell. He also joins quarterback Joe Milton as having transferred from Michigan.
