WHICH READING IS FUNDAMENTAL?
Recent discussion at the Hamilton County Board of Education has dealt with some of the literature available for students to read in their school classrooms and libraries. But we feel like the discussion that really should be had among parents and school board members is why their child can’t read.
Recently released third-grade reading scores indicate that in only 11 of 43 district elementary schools 50% of students are reading at or above the proficiency level. In six schools, 10% or less of students were reading at proficiency level, and in a shocking two schools, 5% or less of students were reading at proficiency level. The editorial below has more details.
Among the subjects we also explored over the last week were the dilemma about building back better (or not) at the Moccasin Bend Mental Health Institute and state Republicans asking their candidates to pay if they want to run under the GOP brand. Check out those editorials, the weekly Ron Hart musings and a Cal Thomas truth-in-labeling look at the recently signed federal infrastructure bill – all below.
