The Hamilton County Commission elected Commissioner Sabrena Smedley, R-Ooltewah, to serve as chairwoman and Commissioner Tim Boyd, R-Chattanooga, to serve as vice chairman on Wednesday morning during annual elections.

As chairwoman, Smedley will replace Commissioner Chip Baker, R-Chattanooga, and will be responsible for conducting meetings and maintaining order on the commission. This is her second term as chairwoman since this commission term began in 2018. As chairman pro tempore, or vice chairman, Boyd will fill in for Smedley when needed.

Smedley, who was nominated by Commissioner Greg Martin, R-Hixson, was unanimously elected to hold the seat for the next year, during the last election of this commission's term. Boyd beat out Commissioner David Sharpe, D-Chattanooga, in a vote of 5-4.

Smedley will receive a $5,000 pay increase with the position and Boyd will receive $2,500, bringing their salaries to $30,394 and $27,894, respectively.

The pair will hold the positions until the new board of commissioners takes office in September 2022.
