Your Friday at a glance:

Good morning, Chattanooga!

By river, road and more road, hundreds of Ironman Triathlon participants will be swimming, biking and running their way through Chattanooga this weekend.

You might be wondering, how in the world does one prepare for 2.4 miles of swimming and 116 miles of biking followed by a 26.2 mile run? Chattanooga’s David Pearson has completed 12 Ironmans and says it’s different for everyone.

“If you interview 10 of us, you’ll have 10 different conversations,” he said of the pool of Ironman competitors. “It’s an evolving practice based on experience.”

Pearson and his wife April see the races as lifestyles and have ample advice on what to bring on the big day. Ironman lets competitors bring 5 drop bags with them full of supplies and gear needs for different stretches of the race.

While I don’t see myself joining in on this test of strength and endurance anytime soon, I might just sneak a peek on Sunday if I get the chance.

Here are some recent stories about Ironman for those who are competing (or are just crazy curious like me.)

DROP BAGS: Here’s what experienced racers recommend bringing along for the ride (and the swim) (and the run).

HELPING HAND: Groups of local paddlers will be volunteering to help swimmers who need medical assistance during the day.

FULL SCHEDULE: And here is your roundup of weekend events, including the Ironman, the Chattanooga Symphony & Opera’s opening night and so much more.
