The Tennessee Valley Authority, which was created nearly a century ago to help diversify power across the rural South, is focusing more attention these days on diversifying its own staff and management to better reflect the seven-state region that it serves.

Despite some progress in recent years, TVA’s staff of more than 10,000 workers is still nearly 80% male and nearly 89% white, according to TVA’s first Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Accessibility Report released this week.

“Since its inception, TVA has always strived to be a force for positive change in the communities we serve,” Megan Flynn, TVA’s chief diversity and inclusion officer, said in the new report. “Our employees are our most valuable assets, and we want our workforce and culture to reflect the DEIA [diversity, equity, inclusion and accessibility] principles we so strongly value.”
