Wiedmer: UTC staffers believe when coaches are alumni, it just means more

Jordan Tippit will never forget the first time he ran onto Finley Stadium's Davenport Field as a University of Tennessee at Chattanooga coach rather than a Mocs player. It was the start of 2019 season, Rusty Wright's first as head coach, and UTC was about to face Eastern Illinois.

"It was nostalgic, for sure," said Tippit, who was a team captain for the 2011 season. "It was a feeling that's hard to describe. Exciting, but anxiety, too. This is your school. There's nothing quite like coaching your school."

There are five UTC coaches total on staff at their alma mater this season: Wright (a 1995 graduate), defensive backs coach Tippit (2012), tight ends coach Jacob Huesman (2015) offensive line coach Kevin Revis (2014) and outside linebackers coach Tyrus Ward (2005).

Asked if this was some grand plan, Wright replied: "Not really.
