The TSSAA Board of Control voted this week to extend the current classification cycle for another two years, through the 2024-25 school year.

The process to begin classifying and determining new district alignments will begin next month after 20-day enrollments have been turned in.

The board also approved a proposal from the state office to implement a scheduling process for football that would better spread region games from week to week and guarantee adequate officiating to allow schools to play those games on Fridays.

Currently, due to a statewide shortage of officials, teams have been asked to play at least one game on a Thursday. However, some coaches were concerned that Thursday crowds could be smaller than for games played on Fridays, which would reduce the amount of revenue produced from gate receipts — and likely from concessions as well — at those contests.

The board’s ruling would assure teams will play region games on Fridays.
