Mark Penney and Marcus Keith were sworn in as new members of the Soddy-Daisy City Commission last week, as the board also named Steve Everett the city's new mayor and Jim Coleman its vice mayor.

Everett, who was elected to a four-year term on the commission in 2020, was named mayor by a 3-2 vote of the five-member board, with Gene-o Shipley, Penney and Everett voting yes.

Coleman, the city's former fire chief, was unanimously voted vice mayor.

"We've got two new good leaders here in Everett and Coleman," Shipley said during the Thursday meeting. "I know they'll work together and do a good job."

As mayor, Everett is excited to have more input on the direction the city is moving as it sees more growth in development, he said in an interview after the meeting.

Everett said he looks forward to working together with the commissioners and other stakeholders to develop formalized one-year, five-year and 10-year strategic plans for the city, he said.

"Hopefully, if I'm not here, if somebody takes my place, they can incorporate (the plans) in and just keep things moving forward," Everett said. "I want to keep the small town feel while we incorporate the growth."

In November, the city issued building permits for more than $1 million in new construction, Everett said.

Owner of the transport company Legacy Towing LLC, Everett has a master's degree in public administration with concentrations in nonprofit and local government management.

He previously served as an officer for the Soddy-Daisy Police Department in the early 1990s-2000s. His father, Doug Everett, was the city's police chief for 15 years.
