From trash to teachable moment
On the river, we call them “trash eddies,” the calm pockets of water tucked in a bend or behind a rock, away from the current. These are the places debris tends to collect: wood; shoes; sunglasses; water bottles. I’ve found iPhones, toothbrushes and pool toys. On a recent river trip in Arkansas, in one shallow eddy, I found a dozen unopened hard seltzers. I do my best to collect the trash I find, but my efforts often feel like a drop in the ocean.
So what else can be done?
Through October, the Tennessee Aquarium is showcasing one creative solution to water pollution. See photos and read the story in our first link below.
