What’s old is new again

In junior high, my school had a “1960s fashion day,” when we were all encouraged to dress up in era-appropriate garb. It was the mid-1990s, and I still have the photo taken that morning of my best friend and me. We’re both wearing baggy jeans and spaghetti-strap tank tops over white tees, giving the peace sign to the camera.

“I have a closet full of actual clothes from the ’60s,” my mom had said while I’d dug through my dresser drawers in search of an outfit. She offered me a wraparound skirt and a gauzy Indian blouse – clothes she’d purchased and worn as a teen – but I refused them.

I didn’t want to dress like my mom. I wanted my own fresh take on the style.

And now here we are – the ’90s are the new ’60s, and Gen Z is revamping the wardrobe of my childhood. From choker necklaces to bucket hats, we explore this renewed fashion trend in our first story below.
