Good morning, Chattanooga!
What do great generals, surgeons and improv actors all have in common?
The ability to make snap decisions and embrace them – at least according to Michael Shield, a Chattanooga transplant who is hosting a six-week improv class at the Chattanooga Theatre Center.
“If there are people in Chattanooga who are trying to become actors or comedians, going to an audition with improv skills on your resume puts you head and shoulders above those who don’t have it,” he said. “It makes you comfortable in any situation.”
A former student at renowned improv programs in Chicago and Los Angeles, Shield said classes are helpful for actors and comedians, but also have applications for everyone who wants to be funny or gain confidence. Just don’t try too hard.
“Improv is a good tool for helping to hone your comedy skills. It can take you from being that typical class clown to being funny and the person people want to hang out with,” he said.
