Artist: Donald Keefe
Medium: Oil on canvas
“Having grown up out West, I am aware of the romanticization that certain landscapes, like the desert, can evoke,” says artist Donald Keefe, born in Des Moines, Iowa, and raised in Southern California.
“Manifest Destiny is a visual commentary on a historical, American concept (the stripes and colors are intentionally evocative of this), but also an expression of the painter’s desire to form something from nothing, and the tension between platonic ideals and the limits of artistic expression through a physical medium.”
Since 2015, Keefe has lived in the Chattanooga area where he serves as associate professor of art at Southern Adventist University.
