* History: The bank began in 1904 Marion Trust and Banking Co. and changed its name to First Volunteer Bank in 1999 when the bank acquired Volunteer Bank and Trust in Hamilton County and moved its headquarters to downtown Chattanooga. First Volunteer acquired other banks in Etowah, Lawrenceburg, Jameston, Jacksboro and Benton, Tennessee, before moving into Georgia in 2012 with the purchase of Gateway Bank and Trust in Ringgold, Georgia. In its 9th and biggest acquisition in its history, the bank bought the parent company of First Bank of Dalton, FBD Holding Company Inc., last year and changed the name of the bank to Builtwell this summer.

* Locations: 30 offices in 13 counties in East and Middle Tennessee and Northwest Georgia. Builtwell's headquarters are at 728 Broad Street in downtown Chattanooga.

* Size: With over $2 billion in assets and over 250 employees, Builtwell is the seventh-biggest bank among the 27 banks operating in metropolitan Chattanooga and the biggest bank headquartered in Chattanooga, according to the FDIC.

* New name: First Volunteer changed its name to Builtwell Bank on July 1 to reflect an identity that goes beyond its roots in the Volunteer State as the bank grows its presence in Georgia. "With this expansion further into Georgia, we realized the need to develop a new name for the bank that reflects our commitment to the communities we serve in both states," Builtwell President Patti Steele says. "The Builtwell name demonstrates our continued commitment to being the well-built bank for which we are known, serving as the local economic engine for Tennessee and Georgia for another 118 years."

* Income: In 2021, First Volunteer reported a yearly net income of $21.5 million.
