Freshman enrollment numbers have returned to pre-pandemic levels at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, although overall enrollment at 11,283 students is down slightly from 2021.

Chancellor Steve Angle, in a speech Friday at Chamberlain Field to members of the university community, said that’s due to an increase in the number of students who opted to enter the workforce instead of staying to finish their degrees.

“The decrease of roughly 132 (full-time students) translates to a budget shortfall of just under $2 million, a problem we will fix with one-time budget reductions this year,” Angle said Friday.

Though UTC did see a decline in enrollment due to the pandemic, the dip was not as substantial as at other colleges across the state, officials said.
