Road closures planned in the Chattanooga area during this weekend’s Ironman

As the Ironman triathlon returns to Chattanooga this weekend with sold-out general registration, there are several closures to watch out for.

Starting Saturday morning, spectators and visitors are encouraged to park in the lots and garages surrounding downtown and use the free electric shuttle and Bike Chattanooga bike share system. Bike Chattanooga ambassadors will be at share stations to assist people renting bikes.

The free CARTA Electric Shuttle Downtown will be operating on a modified schedule on Sunday between CARTA Shuttle Park South (at the Chattanooga Choo Choo) and Shuttle Park North (Aquarium/IMAX). The first shuttles will begin at 4 a.m. and leave every 5-10 minutes. The last shuttle will depart at 12:20 a.m. on Monday.

The Ironkid’s race begins at 9 a.m. Saturday on Riverfront Parkway. The Ironman Expo area will be open from 10 a.m.- 5 p.m. Thursday, from 10 a.m.- 7 p.m. Friday and from 9 a.m.- 3 p.m. Saturday on the Chattanooga Green.

Ironman starts at 7:30 a.m. Sunday with the swim portion. Athletes will be transitioning to the bike race from about 8:10 a.m.-1 p.m. Runners will be on the Riverwalk, Amnicola Highway, the Veterans Bridge, Barton Avenue, Hixson Pike and Riverview Road between 12:25 p.m. Sunday and 12:40 a.m. Monday.

Closed from 5-10:30 a.m.

› Tennessee River between Ross’s Landing and Chickamauga Dam, including the Rivermont Park and Tennessee Riverpark boat ramps


Where traffic will be stopped from 8 a.m.-6 p.m.

› Riverfront Parkway

› West 20th Street

› Broad Street

› Market Street

› Alton Park Boulevard


Converting to four-way stops from 8 a.m.-6 p.m.

› St. Elmo Avenue and Virginia Avenue at West 45th Street. Cyclists will also be on Tennessee Avenue and St. Elmo Avenue to the state line, riding with traffic.


Closed and controlled by Chattanooga police officers from 12:25 p.m. Sunday to 1 a.m. Monday

› Right eastbound lane of Frazier Avenue between Forest Avenue and the Veterans Bridge

› Right northbound lane of Barton Avenue between Frazier Avenue and Baker Street

› Right northbound lane of the Veterans Bridge between East Third Street and Barton Avenue

› Right westbound lane of Amnicola Highway between Old Curtain Pole Road and Lindsay Street

› Riverside Drive between Lindsay Street and Molly Lane

› Battery Place off-ramp from Riverside Drive

› Aquarium Way between Riverside Drive and Walnut Street and all cross streets


Other areas controlled by Chattanooga police officers

› Right eastbound lane of Riverfront Parkway between Molly Lane and Market Street

› Right southbound lane of Market Street between West 20th Street and West 40th Street (the I-24 on-ramp and off-ramp at Market Street will be closed)

› West 40th Street between Alton Park Boulevard and Tennessee Avenue and all cross streets
