As Hamilton County schools begin to implement a new strategic plan this academic year, data shows the district failed to meet the majority of the core student achievement goals it set for itself in the previous plan.

In September 2018, the Hamilton County school board adopted former Superintendent Bryan Johnson’s five-year strategic plan, Future Ready 2023.

The plan aimed to accelerate student achievement, expand post-secondary opportunities, establish efficient and effective operations, support and retain high-quality teachers, and engage the community.

The district hit the majority of its student achievement targets during the plan’s first two years but faced difficulties in the third year after the pandemic disrupted schools. In Hamilton County during the 2020-21 academic year, schools sometimes closed due to spikes in COVID cases, and around one-third of students opted into virtual learning for at least part of the year. The district met just two of its student achievement goals in 2021.
