Chattanooga HHM adds key staff to growing team

HHM Certified Public Accountants, a full-service CPA and consulting firm with locations in Chattanooga, Cleveland and Memphis, has hired two directors, a senior accountant, and five staff accountants to work in its Chattanooga office, according to a news release.

Scott Lowe, CPA, returns to HHM CPAs as a director in the dealership group after working as the chief financial officer for an automotive group. As a director at HHM, he will focus on audit and assurance as well as consulting and tax planning, the release stated. He has more than 25 years of accounting experience specializing in automotive dealerships. He is a graduate of the University of Tennessee at Knoxville, holding both a bachelor's degree and a master's in accountancy.

Ken White, CPA, rejoins the firm as a director. He has more than 35 years of experience in public accounting and will focus on individual and corporate income tax preparation, estate planning, tax planning, and retirement planning, according to the release. He is a graduate of Presbyterian College and graduated from the Army Signal Officer Basic Course at Fort Gordon, Ga. He was formerly a commissioned officer in the Tennessee and South Carolina Army National Guard.

Rhys Lowe, CPA, joins the firm as a senior accountant in the accounting and assurance group. He will be involved in all stages of the audit process and will prepare financial statements for clients in varying industries. He is a graduate of Bob Jones University, the release stated.

Joining the firm as staff accountants are Cole Guess, Jing Guo, Karsyn Guffy, Annie Osborne and Joshua Yebba.


Sandler of Chattanooga hires Mizer as vice president

Sandler of Chattanooga announced in a news release the addition of Charlie Mizer in the role of vice president.

Mizer grew up in a family business. From an early age, he was involved in all aspects of the business alongside his father and two brothers. After earning a business degree from Lee University, he began his career in operations for the growing mid-sized company in East Tennessee, the release stated.

"I'm honored to have the opportunity to join Sandler Chattanooga-it is a dream opportunity," Mizer said in the release."I love contributing to the success of our clients and witnessing their growth and professional development. Food City names Lyon to head human resources

Food City recently named Sherrell Lyon to the position of vice president of human resources. Lyon brings more than 34 years of knowledge and experience to this key role, having most recently served as director of human resources for the company, according to a news release.

"Sherrell has done an outstanding job leading our human resources team and I am confident that he will continue to grow and develop the department in his new role. We're fortunate to have Sherrell serve as a part of our executive leadership team and I would like to personally thank him for his outstanding service and congratulate him on this well-deserved promotion," said Steven C. Smith, Food City president and chief executive officer in the release.

Lyon has served in numerous positions throughout the company, including head cashier, grocery manager, and assistant store manager. He served as store manager for over ten years, eight of which were spent managing one of the company's highest volume locations. He served as senior human resources specialist in the Chattanooga Division before being promoted to director of human resources.

Lyon is responsible for the strategic direction, planning, and coordination of the human resources function within the company, the release stated. He provides support and oversight in the areas of compensation, benefits administration, legal compliance, and record keeping. He works closely with the executive leadership team and operations management team, spearheading their workforce planning, talent acquisition and development, and associate engagement. Lyon also serves as co-sponsor of the company's Energy Conservation Objective Steering Committee, of which he was a founding member.


Haynes wins top award from Tennessee CPA group

Hamilton County Assessor of Property Marty Haynes was recently presented the 2022 Excellence in Operations Award by the Tennessee Association of Assessing Officers.

Will Denami, executive director for the statewide group of assessors, said Haynes was selected for the honor based on "achieving extraordinary service and professionalism in the overall office performance."

Haynes received the award on behalf of the office and said "in sports they say you do not want to directly follow in the footsteps of a legend, in this case, I feel fortunate to have directly followed the late Bill Bennett and we continue to build upon the momentum he carried forward from the late Claude Ramsey. We are blessed to have so many dedicated professionals in our office and we strive every day to make sure the taxpayers of Hamilton County are treated fairly"
