Car stolen, crashed, with sleeping child inside, Chattanooga police say

Girl was left in running car while grandmother went to convenience story, police say

Authorities are searching for a person who stole a vehicle with a sleeping child inside Monday morning, according to a news release from the Chattanooga Police Department.

About 10:15 a.m., police responded to an auto theft and possible kidnapping call in the 2000 block of East Main Street, where a child was asleep in the stolen vehicle, the news release stated.

The driver of the vehicle told police she'd stopped to go into a convenience store and left her sleeping granddaughter in the car with the vehicle running, according to the news release.

She discovered the vehicle was gone after leaving the store. The vehicle was located a short time later, crashed and disabled at the Volkswagen exit near Interstate 75, the release stated.

The child was found unharmed and has been reunited with family, according to the release.
