Restaurant Scene: Tinker’s Soft Serve set for grand opening in downtown Chattanooga

Please don't call it ice cream or sherbet or gelato, or sorbet or even kulfi.

Dole Whip is an entirely different treat. It's dairy-free, gluten-free, and vegans can eat it, too.

If you have been to Disneyland in the past 40 years, there's a good chance you've licked your fair share of it. As the name suggests, it was created in the mid 1980s by the same company that familiarized mainland America with the pineapple.

Tinker's Soft Serve

What: Tinker's Soft Serve grand opening

Where: 815 Chestnut St.

When: Noon to 6 p.m. Friday

Since there are only a handful of Dairy Queens in Chattanoogaland, Tinker's is the spot to fulfill your soft serve hankerings. Like the bar outside the Enchanted Tiki Room at Disneyland, Tinker's has pineapple flavor — and also mango.

The flavor spectrum includes vanilla, lime, orange, chocolate, cotton candy, birthday cake, strawberry and watermelon, along with seasonal offerings.

You can plop a few scoops of the vanilla Dole Whip into a Coke for a float or get a banana split for right under $7.

Friday's grand opening will be full of family-friendly activities like popcorn machines, face-painting by local muralist Olivia Reckert, gift cards from Old Gilman Grille, the Westin Hotel and Alimentari Cafe and Market, and plenty of free samples.
