Chattanooga travelers, attractions bracing for record July 4th crowds

Ronnie Green was renting a vehicle at Chattanooga Airport to drive to Toronto to see his daughter over the long Fourth of July holiday period, and he was bracing to face expected heavy traffic.

“Usually I stay home on the holidays,” the Chattanooga man said in an interview. “This gives us a good opportunity to see her.”

AAA projects a record 50.7 million Americans will travel 50 miles or more from home in the holiday period. Domestic travel during the long weekend will increase by 2.1 million people compared to 2022, surpassing the previous July Fourth weekend record set in 2019 of 49 million travelers, according to AAA.

Hugh Morrow, president of Ruby Falls on Lookout Mountain, said he expects capacity crowds over this weekend and the next at the attraction.
