Prep roundup: East Hamilton softball program ends 10-year state tournament drought

SOFTBALL

Class 3A sectional

East Hamilton 7, Macon County 2: A 10-year state tournament drought ended for the Lady Hurricanes (26-10), who broke through in the top of the fourth inning with a bases-clearing triple by senior Grace Hixson, followed by a two-run homer by sophomore Yulai Woodruff.

East Hamilton junior Ashlynn Watkins did not allow an earned run while throwing 110 pitches in a complete game to help her team move on to this week's Spring Fling.

Gabi Printup collected three of 17 hits for the visitors, and Reese Knox, Bailey Poschke, Hixson, Watkins and Woodruff also had multiple hits.

The Lady Canes will face Gibbs (36-4) in the state quarterfinals at 5 p.m. Eastern on Tuesday in Murfreesboro.


BOYS' SOCCER

Class AA sectional

East Hamilton 3, DeKalb County 1: The Hurricanes (11-6-4) were dominant as they built a 3-0 lead by the 71st minute and clinched their first state tournament berth since 2015.

East Hamilton will face Valor College Prep (14-4-3) at 7:30 Eastern in Tuesday's Class AA quarterfinals at the Richard Siegel Soccer Complex in Murfreesboro.

Division II-AA state quarterfinal

Boyd Buchanan 1, St. George's 0, OT: The Buccaneers advanced to the Spring Fling with an overtime home win. Edson Angel had the winning score at the left post on a cross by Drew Pollard.

Boyd Buchanan (16-2-1) will take on Bell Buckle's Webb School at 3 p.m. Eastern in Wednesday's DII-AA semifinals at the Richard Siegel Soccer Complex. Senior star Mills Wood's playing status may be in jeopardy as the Bucs' leading scorer was issued a red card in the final minutes of Sunday's victory.
